"Mr President, I one hundred per cent agree that we need to put every pressure possible on Azerbaijan to respect human rights. That is really what this proposal today is all about.
For that reason, it is unfortunate that the EPP find themselves in the position that they cannot back this resolution, and we have got to take a lesson from that. We have to do everything, prior to coming to Parliament, to try and get a joint resolution that all parties and all groups can sign up to.
For us, the suggestion that we should ‘immediately’ break off negotiations with Azerbaijan makes no sense, because if we were to do that and apply it to other countries in the world then we would have negotiations with no-one. If you took that line with Iran, we would not be talking about the nuclear deal right now.
So it is for that reason in particular – that of over-extending ourselves and doing things for one country that we do not do for another country – that we find ourselves in the position we are today.
We want to see human rights restored and respect in Azerbaijan, but there is a way we can all do it together."@en1
