We must not encourage the dangerous boat journeys, organised by criminal and terrorist people smugglers. We should appreciate that this tragic humanitarian crisis does not end at Europe’s borders, and must take every step to make end the wicked ends of those who traffic people across the Mediterranean. As the grandson of a refugee, I fully accept my responsibility to act on this tragedy, but there are many States, including those in the Gulf, who are yet to fulfil their humanitarian obligations.
