"I abstained on the vote on this report and supported an alternative motion. The alternative motion for resolution that I supported respects the principle of providing Member States with the freedom to choose their water management systems. At the same time it also respectfully highlights the significance of the European Citizens’ Initiative, its role in the democratic process and supports its overall objectives. While I stand behind many fundamental aspects of the Boylan Right2Water Report I have chosen to abstain, supporting both the inclusion of water and sanitation services references in trade agreements such as TTIP and applying a progressive charge proportional to the amount of water used. Encouraging EU institutions and Member States to be obliged to ensure that all inhabitants enjoy the right to water and sanitation and also increase its efforts to achieve universal access to water and sanitation are ideals which I have always whole heartedly supported."@en1
