"Whilst I am glad to see that the ECI has proven a successful tool in encouraging interaction between citizens and EU policy-making, I was unable to support the report from the ENVI Committee. Of particular concern was the provision of water in relation to the internal market. The EU is supposed to ensure neutrality as regards national, regional and local choices for the provision of water services, and it is up to the Member States, and not the Commission to determine how these services should be run. As a British MEP, I am proud to say that the UK already has universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation; services which are predominately managed by private and well regulated companies. The ENVI report however emphasises the public provision of water services and neither allows for private enterprises or public-private partnerships, nor acknowledges the existing role they play in delivering high quality and affordable services across the EU and the developing world. It is for these reasons that I voted against."@en1
