"The passing of the report is a victory for the Right2Water campaigners. It calls on the EU Commission to enshrine the human right to water in legislation, to not promote privatisation of water services (including as part of Troika demands) and to ensure that water services are not included in the TTIP agreement. Crucially, as rapporteur, I ensured that there are many references in the text which make it very clear that the EU must stay out of Member States’ decision on how they organise their water services and that the Commission should remain neutral on the issue which they have not been to date. Disappointingly but not surprisingly, Fine Gael and the Unionists were the only Irish MEPs to not vote in favour of this report. Having failed to remove the most progressive elements of the report and seemingly content to have EU interference in Ireland’s water services they showed their contempt for the Right2Water campaign. Whilst I tried to remove some ambiguous wording in Para92 Fine Gael’s group blocked the vote on the removal. The report as a whole is a massive victory for the human right to water and a step in the right direction for Irish citizens."@en1
