"Mr President, the events of recent days in Hungary and on the shores of southern Europe have highlighted the fact that the plight of those fleeing war-torn communities in Syria and elsewhere must not be compared with the ambitions of those economic migrants to whom freedom of movement is not a saviour but an opportunity. The image of a young boy whose body was found on a beach will have left an indelible scar upon even the sternest of minds, and it is right that governments across the EU take action to alleviate what is a humanitarian crisis. In this situation, the right to life must form the core of our response, and I am pleased that the UK Prime Minister has committed to resettling 20 000 Syrian refugees by 2020, many of whom are the most vulnerable that we can imagine. Our Government is also correct when it stresses that the wider solution to this influx of refugees can come only from aiding peace and stability and upholding the basic rights in societies where the current threat is real. I want to see Christians and other religious minorities in these communities empowered by the assurance that they do not have to leave their ancestral homes, and that the international community will support their right to life and freedom of conscience and expression."@en1
