"I personally do not object to animal cloning in principle. I do believe however, that the disproportionate call for a permanent ban could be damaging, since this is based on a big, overarching assumption that cloning can only lead to bad things. What about the possibilities that cloning and scientific advance can lead to an improvement in animal welfare? This report not only disregards evidence-based decision-making in several fundamental aspects; a principle I strongly believe should be at the heart of all EU policymaking, but given the current animal welfare issues identified in the European Food Safety Authority’s 2008 opinion, this report also fails to account for the fact that these animal welfare issues could be significantly alleviated in the future. Moreover, as an impact assessment of the proposed traceability system is yet to be conducted, it remains very unclear whether such a mechanism can even be effective. I therefore view this report as legally unenforceable and subsequently wholly ineffective as a piece of legislation. I am consequently disappointed that my fellow elected representatives have been so absolute in the opinions and it is for these reasons that I voted against."@en1
