"The Commission’s proposal which amends Regulation 1007/2009 brings the EU into compliance with the WTO and thereby enables the European Union to fulfil its international obligations. Given that neither of the revised exemptions have been, or are envisaged to be in operation in the UK, the report does not substantially affect the ban on trade in seal products and therefore does not present any significant difficulties. In fact, since seals are a species that is highly susceptible to pain and distress, the modification of the IC exemption is a welcome and necessary alteration, providing assurance of more humane treatment and practices in relation to seal hunting. As some 900 000 seals are hunted each year across the globe with around one third of world trade in seal products either passing through or ending up in the EU market, EU Member States have a duty to protect against the unnecessary suffering of seals and this report can serve as an example to the rest of world. It was for these reasons that I voted in favour."@en1
