"I abstained on this report on Guidelines for employment policies of Member States. This report is certainly an improvement on the Commission proposal on this topic but it also includes several problematic elements that promote business interests at the expense of labour rights. The Commission proposal focused on reforming education systems in order to match skills with the demand of the labour market, modernising social security systems, reforming pension systems including linking retirement age to life expectancy, and shifting the tax burden from labour to other sources of taxation. The Agea report improved on this significantly by including references to decent working conditions and adequate wages, labour standards, adequate social protection, among other things. The report also widened the scope of the report to challenging poverty. I was in favour of many elements of the report. However, there were also several aspects of the report I had problems with, including removing important regulations for business, the promotion of entrepreneurship in the social care sector and skewing Member States’ education systems to meet the needs of the labour market. I have serious concerns about these aspects of the report, which is why I abstained."@en1
