"I voted against this report as it is Sinn Fein’s position that the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership being negotiated by the EU and US will have disastrous consequences for democracy, the environment, labour rights and public services.
I voted in favour of several amendments tabled by my group, the GUE/NGL, and the Greens. These ranged from outright rejection of the TTIP project to amendments aimed at protecting workers’ rights, public services, and the environment.
On the critical issue of the ISDS – investor-state dispute settlement – there were two key compromise amendments, 117 (proposed by rapporteur Lange) and 118 (proposed by the Greens). I voted against Amendment 117 and in favour of Amendment 118.
Amendment 117 aims to create a ‘new’ ISDS along the lines of EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström’s recent proposal, which includes public hearings and an appeals mechanism. The proposal still retained the fundamental element of investors being able to sue states over public policy.
The Greens’ compromise amendment calls on the Commission to reject the inclusion of ISDS in TTIP as other remedies are already available."@en1
