"I supported the resolution on Burundi, given that the crisis in the country that erupted following the decision of President Nkurunziza to try to seek a third term in clear breach of the Arusha Agreement needs to be urgently addressed. The violence used by government-backed militias against peaceful demonstrators, the complete absence of possibilities for the opposition to campaign, and the attacks on media including the blowing up of radio stations, all of which render any elections to take place in the near future completely invalid, are utterly unacceptable.
I acknowledge that the EU is already offering important support to Burundi – in the last EDF programme we doubled our aid to the country and the External Action Service have announced EUR 1.5 million to support the region in assisting refugees fleeing repression. Some are calling into question whether we should continue this support given the government’s behaviour, but I would argue that nor the people in Burundi, nor countries in the neighbourhood, should pay for the actions of a repressive regime. That is why I call on the Commission and High Representative to keep up current engagements, while exploring ways to make sure the funds are implemented to the direct benefit of the people of Burundi, not their irresponsible leadership."@en1
