". – Whilst good copyright legislation is essential for competitiveness and entrepreneurship, the proposed paragraph on ‘freedom of panorama’ would have meant that permission would be needed to use even background or chance photos of public buildings, statues and landmarks for commercial purposes. Although this is the case in some Member States already, in the UK under Section 62 of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act photographers can freely use such photos. With my Conservative colleagues, I voted against this paragraph so that our photographers can continue to act freely rather than have other countries trying to impose their restrictive laws on us. This is a minor example of why subsidiarity and national sovereignty must be respected."@en1
