"I supported the resolution on Yemen given the crisis is causing an appalling humanitarian crisis and is further destabilising the country, including by creating a breeding ground for the expansion of terrorist and extremist organisations like IS and Al-Qaeda.
I therefore urge the High Representative to offer full support to the efforts of the UN to broker peace negotiations between the warring parties, as well as to Oman in its role as negotiator for achieving a cease-fire between the Houthis and the forces loyal to the government of Yemen as a first step towards a political solution.
The EU should also work with all stakeholders towards securing a humanitarian pause in order to allow life-saving assistance badly need by the Yemeni people and push for rapid, safe and unhindered access for humanitarian actors to reach people in need of humanitarian assistance.
Looking at the mid-term, Europe should champion a grand international plan in the UN to secure Yemen’s water supply, which could be instrumental in bringing a potential peace process to a successful conclusion, giving the population a perspective to be able to improve agriculture, feed themselves and rebuild the country. Fulfilling these conditions will be crucial for bringing sustainable peace to Yemen and the region."@en1
