"The situation in Yemen is a particularly concerning one, and I particularly note the terrible conditions in Aden and the surrounding areas. I support the right of the people of South Yemen to self-determination. This report has much to commend it, and addresses some of the issues in Yemen, but not all. Furthermore, it pushes European foreign policy, which should be the preserve of the Member States. I therefore decided on balance to abstain. My amendments to this report were voted against by the Parliament. These included highlighting the need for the correct actors to be attending any peace negotiations, equal access for the distribution of humanitarian aid in both the north and south of the Yemen, as well as noting that the continued unity of Yemen, is not necessarily the approach to a securing a lasting peace."@en1
