"Madam President, we do need to update copyright for the digital age, and people expect to be able to take their music, films and books with them when they travel. Consumers should be able to access legally-available content and know when they buy it how portable it is. But portability must not be an excuse for piracy – 8 million people work in the creative sector and they should be paid properly. Therefore, exemptions need to be clear and targeted. Text and data mining has brought huge benefits for science and research in the non-commercial sector in my Member State, and there are some interesting examples of e-lending in rural areas. So perhaps the Commissioner could build on the experience in the countries that are doing this in his work. In the UK and in other countries, the right to take pictures in public places of public buildings is a cherished freedom and an EU limitation is not appropriate. Incidentally, I would like to say to Ms Niebler that we do not need an internet tax across Europe either."@en1
