"I voted in favour of the report to give support for good organisation and efficient functioning of this important sector of the rural economy, generating employment not only in agriculture but particularly in the food-processing sector.
The EU fruit and vegetable scheme is highly valued among UK farmers and deemed largely efficient. It is, however, important to send a strong signal to the Commission in favour of further simplification of the scheme. At the same time, I support the development of POs as a way of increasing the bargaining power of fruit and vegetable farmers and managing market risks. The report’s provisions advocating shorter supply chains and the development of local markets for direct sales should also be strongly supported.
I voted against paragraph 60 of the report, calling for the crisis prevention and management measures to be financed outside of the CAP budgetary envelopes. Whereas Labour recognises the fairness of compensating farmers for losses they may suffer because of factors that remain out of their control (such as the Russian agrifood embargo), the CAP already provides adequate financial measures to deal with such emergencies."@en1
