"I have received more emails from my constituents on the subject of TTIP than on any other in the 11 years that I have been an MEP. Few people realise that the UK’s trade policy was surrendered to the EU when we joined in 1973. The main concern of my constituents is that the proposed ISDS mechanism would enable foreign corporations to take our government to court if it failed to comply with a TTIP requirement. This would not be in a civil court of law subject to the law of contract, but rather in a secret tribunal if government policy were to infringe TTIP. In particular my constituent concerns, which I share, are that areas such as the NHS could be opened up to private international companies; and this could not be altered later even if a democratically elected government chose to change the policy. Whether this will or will not be included in the final treaty remains to be seen, but from my point of view I will oppose TTIP because UK trade policy should be decided by the UK Government and not the European Union."@en1
