"Madam President, these negotiations could present a unique opportunity to re-regulate globalisation and promote the high standards on which the European Union prides itself, and they could offer a means of creating jobs and growth in regions like my own where we urgently need them.
Trade is a tool: it is neither good nor bad. It all depends on the level of the rules set out in trade agreements, and Labour MEPs have set out exactly what we would like to see in a future TTIP deal: a full exclusion of public services, regardless of how they are provided, organised or financed; protection of our standards and our democracies; and no ISDS or special systems for foreign investors.
We delivered the first two in the Trade Committee, but we did not deliver the third, and that is why Labour MEPs will reject ISDS unambiguously tomorrow. This resolution’s only purpose is to steer the Commission. A fudge on ISDS will not do this; it will not deliver a TTIP that we will be able to support in the future."@en1
