"Madam President, across the EU there has been a growing monopolisation of arable land by large corporate agricultural enterprises – a process referred to as land grabbing. It is edging out small family-run farms and pushing the young out of farming. In the past eight years, around three million farms, or 20% of the total, have been lost in the EU. The entry into the market of these large agri-businesses, particularly in eastern Member States, is causing concern. Fewer and fewer workers are employed, while farming based on monocultures, flex crops and a greater reliance on chemicals and antibiotics has worrying implications for our biodiversity, ecosystems and the richness and variety of EU food cultures. The reasons for land grabbing are complex. However, if left unchallenged, this manifestation of unregulated capitalism will see the landscape of Europe change forever, to the benefit of a few, with the price paid by the many."@en1
