"This particular case concerned the waiving of immunity of Sotirios Zarianopoulos, a Member of the European Parliament, as part of an investigation concerning an alleged crime. Sotirios Zarianopoulos has been accused of threatening physical violence and illegally entering the premises of the Greek public television channel ERT-3 on 4 March 2010 to interrupt the midday news bulletin and read out a statement.
However, it should be noted that the government at the time forced the closure of the television station. Moreover, Mr Zarianopoulos was a trade union activist at the time who was working with the employees of the television station. There is credible evidence to suggest that these charges are politically motivated and furthermore these charges are being vigorously contested, specifically the accusation that there was forced entry. While it is not up to Parliament to decide whether or not the Member of the European Parliament subject to legal proceedings is guilty, the suggestion of political persecution means that it is quite unlikely that Sotirios Zarianopoulos would receive a fair trial.
It was for these reasons that I voted against waiving immunity in this particular situation."@en1
