"Madam President, last week I visited the Mediterranean to see the humanitarian crisis. I visited a centre for young migrants in Catania with accommodation for 36, but housing 64. I visited a reception centre in Pessalo holding hundreds of migrants in conditions worse than in prison. I held a two-month-old old baby called Falestine whose cot is a dirty mattress in a small box—room which also sleeps six women. I hugged a young girl called Happy. In Lampedusa, 400 migrants and refugees are living in overcrowded, cramped conditions. Sometimes there are 1 500; many of them are in the same clothes for two weeks.
The situation is sickening, but nobody puts their children on a boat unless the water is safer than land. We do not need more Frontex: we need more compassion. We need more search and rescue in the Mediterranean, and we need more safe and legal access to Member States."@en1
