"Madam President, as someone who has a long-standing relationship with Nepal – having worked with the pro-democracy movement prior to the first-ever democratic elections, which I observed – and someone with a deep admiration for the Nepali people and their determination to rebuild their country after the recent devastating earthquake, I know that one of the major concerns now is for children. There are 1.7 million vulnerable children who have been affected, many of them having lost their parents. Many children have been displaced, and it is at this time that they are most at risk of being trafficked or taken by unrelated adults. It is therefore really important that we urgently put into place procedures to prevent this from happening.
Also, recognising that many schools have been destroyed, we need to unite and to prioritise rebuilding these schools and getting the children back into their classes so that their studies are not completely disrupted.
The monsoon season is fast approaching, and this will have major consequences for the relief efforts ..."@en1
