"Mr President, in the United Kingdom we need a basket of different energy types. I think that is pretty much universally accepted. Personally, I think that, as far as renewables are concerned, wind power is a bit of a dead end in the UK, certainly until the storage problem has been sorted. Sometimes the wind blows, sometimes the wind does not blow, and the times when we need the most power are generally the hottest and coldest days of the year when the wind is not blowing. Other types of renewables – tidal power, for example – are much closer to being sustainable and economical, and being ready to be introduced. Decisions should always be based on technology, not targets. The European Union is all about its targets, but the trouble with targets is that they distort and lead you down a blind alley. But none of this is really the point. The point is that we do not need an EU energy strategy. We need a UK energy strategy."@en1
