"Mr President, Russia has been sliding into autocracy. It is a state where journalists are murdered, where opposition is harassed, where media are closed down, and every contiguous state feels the pressure of Russian revanchism, whether in the form of oil and gas diplomacy or, tragically, of direct military action. Saying these things does not mean that you support any particular foreign policy; it is simply acknowledging the truth about the unhappy developments in that country. I have to say I was surprised by the alignment of forces in this Chamber who are reluctant even to point out what is happening internally in Russia. There are some Eurosceptics who have got themselves, by a bizarre kind of ‘my enemy’s enemy is my friend’ logic, into lining up with one of the most repressive regimes in this part of the world. The reason I am against the Brussels racket is precisely because I believe in freedom, democracy and the rule of law, and when I extend that logic to what is happening in the Kremlin, I know whose side I am on."@en1
