"Mr President, it is essential that we in Europe, as well as national governments, continue to face up to the problem of climate change.
In 2012 the Kyoto Protocol, as the only existing and binding agreement under which developed countries undertake quantitative commitments to cut greenhouse gases, was amended so that it could seamlessly continue. The Doha Amendment creates a second commitment period from January 2013 to December 2020.
For the EU and its Member States, ratification of the Doha Amendment does not entail any new commitments beyond those set out in the 2009 climate and energy package: a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels. EU legislation concerning the technical implementation of the Doha Amendment was adopted last year in May 2014.
We all know that, in the long run, emissions will have a negative impact on many sectors, such as the environment, health and our well-being, as well as our economies. That is why I strongly support the objectives of the Doha Amendment, which ensure that, over the period until 2020, we continue to have a tactical and coordinated response to climate change."@en1
