"The principle of subsidiarity requires decisions to be taken at the closest possible level to the citizen. Decisions on issues such as quotas in the boardroom are decisions which should be taken by the Member States concerned, not by the European Union.
This report was not in keeping with that principle, and I felt it necessary to vote against – whatever my personal opinions on some of the issues contained within the report. Notwithstanding that, the report itself was very mixed: it safeguarded some important rights (which should be done at national level) whilst also proposing dangerous state interference in various areas."@en1
