"Madam President, I supported this because I believe we need to help farmers who are in crisis. Unfortunately, at this stage in Ireland, the common agricultural policy has become an institutional creation that has put many small farmers in crisis. The very funding that goes to many countries, and in particular Ireland, has created an un-level playing field, whereby the richest farmers get the biggest payments and the smallest farmers get the smallest payments, creating a situation where you are driving the small farmers out of business and whereby only the farmers on big payments can get loans to purchase the farms of the smaller farmers. So the common agricultural policy, far from resolving a crisis, is actually creating a crisis in my country. The last Commissioner, even though he is a Member of the EPP, is described in Ireland as a communist by the rich farmers and members of the EPP."@en1
