"Mr President, I would also like to thank Mrs Noichl for her comprehensive and very valuable report. Much earlier in the debate, Mrs Arena said that we need to send a clear message to ourselves, to the European Union, the Commission and the citizens about gender equality. I think there is one particular issue, which has already been mentioned, which is very important: that is the whole matter of trafficking in human beings, which is one of the most lucrative criminal activities in the world today. Of course, the vast majority of victims of trafficking are women. Eighty percent of victims of trafficking in the EU are women, and most of them, as we know, are trafficked for the purposes of sexual exploitation. We really must do everything that we can to end what is, in effect, modern slavery. We all know there is a directive on human trafficking, but the problem with this has been its implementation. In her report, Maria Noichl calls on Member States to fully implement the Anti-Trafficking Directive. We must do everything that we can in our own Member States to make sure that this is happening, because this is one of the areas where the EU has huge competence. It is the only organisation that can deal with it, because human trafficking is something which has to be done across borders, across countries and across nationalities. We know that our citizens want this, and I know it as a representative of London, which is one of the destinations for trafficked women. Therefore I think we have a particular responsibility, not only in terms of gender equality in itself but particularly in human trafficking. I would say that human trafficking is important for gender equality because the women involved are poor and vulnerable. Therefore I ask all of you to support the report and vote for it tomorrow."@en1
