"Mr President, I support this idea of a reserve to help farmers, but I think it is a bit sad that the European Union has decided to become the world’s policeman and has sent that bill to the farmers of Europe.
As far as I can see, it is not working. It is all right to say that we must do something – anything – just for the sake of it, but when it costs farmers to the tune of EUR 235 million in Ireland and costs hundreds of millions all around Europe, it is hard to know what has been achieved. It should be saved for a real crisis. We already have a reserve in Ireland under the common agricultural policy, and that is 80% of the common agricultural policy’s funding – reserved for the richest farmers, because they are the ones who, supposedly, must be protected. But to the small family farm in my country, goodbye: this emergency fund will not help them."@en1
