"The proposal to streamline two separate schemes, the School Milk Scheme and the Fruit and Vegetables in School Scheme, makes sense. The promotion of healthy eating among children is important and laudable – although, in reality, Member States should not need an EU scheme to prioritise initiatives aimed at making our children healthier. Recognising that these schemes are in place, Parliament should be endeavouring to make them as uncomplicated and as fair as possible. Funds should be allocated according to the proportion and numbers of children in each country, and should be targeted at promoting local produce. The promotion of fresh produce, and especially the consumption fresh milk, which is in decline, should be prioritised. The principle of subsidiarity should mean that key decisions are made at national and regional level, as it is here that the needs of local communities can best be addressed. I have a fundamental disagreement with the committee amendments which were passed supporting more funds being spent on advertising EU involvement in the scheme, rather than on the promotion of healthy eating. I do not believe is the most beneficial use of funds and for this reason I voted against."@en1
