"We are asking the Commission what steps will be taken to tackle the phenomenon of forced early or child marriage. We are faced with tragic examples of forced marriage involving minors, and we must realise that these are happening within the EU, which is extremely worrisome. Only 11 Member States have ratified the Istanbul Convention, which criminalises forced marriage, rightly recognising it as a human-rights violation and a form of gender-based violence. Forced early or child marriages have terrible implications and long-term consequences for girls. Health risks, abuse and the cutting-short of education are all common factors limiting empowerment, fuelling poverty, destroying childhood and depriving girls and women of freedom. During the past five years, gender equality was to have been a priority in at least 75% of all EU-funded development projects. However, last year a review showed that this was the case with only 28% of EU proposals. Clearly the Commission is not pushing this priority hard enough."@en1
