"Whilst highly alarming, it is not unsurprising that the aim of a Common EU Defence and Security Policy remains a top priority for these institutions.
It is no secret that I and my party believe wholeheartedly in the sovereign role of the armed forces in the United Kingdom to keep our borders and our people safe. Their skill, their courage and their enduring sacrifice is testament to the fact that this crucial function must not be outsourced to the eurocrats of Brussels and Strasbourg.
One must question whether this fascination is more about integration and harmonisation than the safety of our collective nations. That is why I have opposed the report.
I do, however, welcome the pressure placed on Member States to adhere to the principle of at least 2% GDP spending on defence. This was a key part of my party’s recent election manifesto and one to which we will seek to ensure that the UK Government remains accountable in times ahead."@en1
