"Madam President, let me start by thanking the rapporteur for her hard work and balanced approach in dealing with this delicate matter. Regardless of the opinions held across this House, I think that we can all agree that it is in everyone’s interest for Turkey to be a safe, democratic and prosperous country. While I take on board some of the concerns expressed by colleagues, I am afraid that the default negative position adopted by some keeps pushing Turkey further away instead of drawing it into the fold. Though this may be exactly what some want, we should not be surprised to see that constantly boxing Turkey out has frustrated Turkish moderates and fostered the isolationist sentiment the many in this House are so quick to condemn. Let us adopt a more cohesive approach that rewards positive developments. It is the only way that we will be able to genuinely evaluate whether or not the EU can take its relationship with Turkey to the next level."@en1
