"With the free movement of goods being a vital component of the Common Market, it is absolutely necessary for Italy, as well as the EU collectively, to take the prescribed action to prevent the spread of to the rest of the market. Import controls are one of the EU’s most effective tools for preventing undesirable substances and diseases from entering the market and a risk-based approach is of course the most logical way to determine which products are safe for importing. Although the eradication of infected plants will negatively impact the important olive growing regions of southern Italy in the short term, to allow this disease to spread further would not be in the interest of growers. The Conservative Party believes that coordinated measures by EU Member States are needed to preserve the wellbeing of the Common Market, which benefits the economies of the UK and EU as a whole, so I voted in favour of this resolution."@en1
