"is a plant pathogenic bacterium that was detected in olive trees in Apulia province in Italy in October 2013. The bacteria-affected olive trees in the region could have a potential impact on 8 000 workers in the olive culture sector risk who are at risk of losing their livelihoods. Olive production is one of the Apulia region’s most important agricultural sectors, accounting for 11.6% (or EUR 522 million) of the total value of agricultural production in the region and 30% of the value of Italian olive production in 2013. The EU Commission proposed to remove and destroy infested plants, and all host plants within a radius of 100m, irrespective of their health status. This could lead to desertification and destruction of agricultural heritage, without clear scientific evidence of its effectiveness in preventing the spread of the pathogen. There is another solution, different to the removal or destruction of all affected plants. My Group tabled an alternative resolution calling on the Commission to consider alternative solutions that will also safeguard the agro-food sector and the environment in the region. It was for these reasons that I voted against this Joint Motion for Resolution."@en1
