"I voted with my socialist colleagues in favour of this resolution because it calls on the Commission to present an ambitious proposal for a European Accessibility Act, with the full involvement of persons with disabilities throughout the legislative cycle. It also stresses the need for this proposal to include a full range of policy areas with regard to the accessibility of goods and services for all EU citizens, fostering independent living and full inclusion of people with disabilities and establishing an ongoing, effective and independent monitoring and enforcement mechanism.
This vote was of particular personal interest. Firstly, due to the need to take into account the diversity existing among persons with disabilities by adopting specific actions and strategies which address the perspective of children, women & girls and persons identifying as LGBTI with disabilities who might suffer from multiple forms of discrimination and have even more specific needs. That must include ensuring their contribution to the public debate and their participation in decision making, in order to respect the principle reflected in the parliamentary Disability Intergroup’s motto: ‘Nothing about us without us’. Secondly, it stresses the importance of taking disability into account in the EU development and Humanitarian Aid strategy. The EU must adopt a disability and development policy."@en1
