"I shadowed this Resolution on behalf of my Group and was very pleased to support it. As the EU has ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), its Institutions as well as the Member States have significant responsibilities to ensure that the rights of persons with disabilities are fully vindicated. This means that both the Commission and Member States must take a human-rights-based approach to disability at all levels of EU and national policymaking.
Unfortunately my own Member State, Ireland is one of the three countries in the EU which has signed but not yet ratified the Convention and I continue to urge the Irish Government to do so as soon as possible in the interest of our disabled citizens and their families. I was particularly pleased that the ALDE amendment calling on Member States to adopt the EU Anti-Discrimination Directive without further delay was carried. This would be a major step forward as the Directive seeks to protect persons with disabilities from discrimination in the areas of social protection, healthcare, education and the supply of goods and services such as housing, transport and insurance."@en1
