"I have voted against this oral question on the grounds that this directive encroaches too far into Member States’ right of subsidiarity and would have a disproportionate cost for the UK.
Parliament’s amendments also go beyond the Commission’s original proposal and the recommendations of the International Labour Organisation. Additionally there are no legal grounds for the EU to be legislating on paternity leave.
The Conservative Party believes that women’s rights are fundamental but sees no benefit for maternity, paternity or parental leave to be legislated on at an EU wide level. The Conservatives have already made considerable and progressive changes in the UK to maternity and parental leave in addition to the provision of childcare to help both mothers and fathers return to work after the birth of a child."@en1
