"Mr President, I voted in favour of this motion for resolution because it is unacceptable that the Maternity Leave Directive is still blocked in the Council – and now there are rumours it might even be withdrawn as part of the Commission’s refit exercise to make EU law lighter. Yes, we need to have more efficient law-making that focuses on crucial things, but I find it difficult to understand why issues like the participation of women in the labour market and the fight against poverty, which is directly linked to this, would not be seen as key ones, on which the EU should tap the full potential of its ability to move things forward. It is unbelievable that for an issue as crucial as this one, which affects our entire society, we are still relying on a 1992 directive that has not been adapted to present-day needs. In the UK, more than half of mothers rely on grandparents when they go back to work, but not everyone is lucky enough to be able to rely on the help of others. That is why I urge the Commission to make sure that the Council finally breaks the deadlock on this crucial issue instead of taking the easy way out and referring it to the bin."@en1
