"Today the European Parliament has shown that promotion and protection of human rights sits at the top of the agenda. Thanks to the approval of the proposed legislation on conflict minerals, the EU will endeavour to break the links between the trade and extraction of minerals, and the financing of armed conflicts. Moreover, this proposed legislation will not just be about banning imports from conflict-affected areas, but also about creating a European market for responsibly—traded minerals sourced from conflict regions. We believe that the entire supply chain should be covered and follow internationally agreed ‘due diligence’. In other words: a system of checks and reporting. Lastly, we believe that every citizen in Europe should be sure that what they buy is not financing conflicts and human rights abuses."@en1
