"UKIP MEPs voted against this report as we feel it attempts to harmonise laws to the detriment of UK patients, UK companies and the UK health environment. The UK already has an excellent regime for regulating resistance to antibiotics, and we fear an EU scheme would undermine this via harmonisation. This regime is under constant and regular update, and only recently the UK Chief medical officer has initiated future requirements that would benefit the UK. This latest EU interference would put public health at risk, putting the emphasis on EU harmonisation before that of good medical practice, which is unacceptable to UKIP MEPs. A UK independent of the EU would work with the WHO and other international public health and government health bodies, as we feel they have a relevant legitimacy lacking of the EU. UKIP MEPs feel any developments in this field should be science—led, with the consultation and collaboration of parties directly impacted by any proposed changes."@en1
