"Just as the heinous and horrific crimes ISIS commits against ordinary civilians are a matter not only for Iraqis and Syrians but for humanity at large, so the destruction of these ancient cultural sites is a matter of common human heritage and identity. I voted in favour of the resolution as I think it is right that the international community should move to address these crimes. The resolution calls particularly for efforts to track and document that which has been lost, and for support for the brave Syrian and Iraqi archaeologists who are attempting to document artefacts that have been destroyed, and to prevent looting, at risk to their own lives. The concern for common historic cultural artefacts goes hand in hand with the EU’s moral obligation to support the victims of ISIS’ crimes against humanity, and to come up a moral and humane response to those thousands of refugees fleeing these wars, crossing seas and risking their lives to seek safety. That very same common humanity embodied by our common cultural heritage mandates us to provide a compassionate response to their plight."@en1
