"I condemn in the strongest terms the deliberate terrorist attack perpetrated by Al-Shabaab in Garissa. Terrorism must be condemned whatever the ideology behind it – be it political or under the pretext of religion.
Al-Shabaab, ISIS and Al-Qaida clearly target all civilians, no matter what religion. Singling out Christians in Kenya is a tactic aimed at stoking ethnic and religious tensions. The aim is to divide Kenyan religious and ethnic communities and to create conflict between the Muslims and the non-Muslims in the country. Violent extremists and terrorists succeed when people start mistrusting each other because of social boundaries and stereotypes. We cannot allow this to happen.
The fight against extremism is not about Christians versus Muslims, or Muslims versus Jews: it is about all citizens versus extremists. We must stop these religious divisions and we must stand together against terror and hatred. We must stand for respect and diversity. We must unite and promote our values of equality, freedom, and democracy."@en1
