"I voted in favour of this joint motion for a resolution. It is absolutely imperative to show solidarity with those who require it most. Despite public outrage over the horrendous loss of lives and the plight of thousands of migrants fleeing poverty and conflict in their homelands, the uncomfortable reality is that many EU citizens are opposed to further immigration into Europe – as is evidenced by the rise of various right-wing anti-immigration parties. Furthermore, the European Council’s recent 10-point plan included measures to tighten up, rather than open up, borders, and included too the introduction of fingerprinting of migrants, and return programmes for irregular migrants. These measures only serve to foster a sense of distrust and suspicion and do not provide any meaningful steps towards the eradication of poverty, or any hope for those who require it so desperately. It should be remembered that the European Union was meant to be as much about solidarity as about economic growth. As we all know, all politics is local, but solidarity has no borders."@en1
