"Madam President, I have always been of the view that we should never leave the next generation in a position worse off than the one in which we ourselves now live. The challenge of feeding the world’s rapidly growing population is one of the biggest threats to the same. Statistics show that there will be a 60 % increase in the demand for food by 2050 as the population expands. How are we going to meet this increased demand, and how are we going to use the resources we have more efficiently?
Expo Milano promises to provide a forum where we can begin to tackle these key issues and this is of course welcome, but I would caution against raising expectations that cannot possibly be met. The resolution itself takes a very broad and ambitious approach to what is achievable at the Expo, urging the Commission to make commitments on development aid, climate change, healthy soil and land-grabbing.
Nevertheless, while I support the general direction of the resolution, I would have preferred a more focused, streamlined approach that gives a clear and unambiguous message and I congratulate the rapporteur on his work."@en1
