"I voted in favour of this Report which will enable Ireland to access funding under the Youth Employment Initiative by June this year. However, it must be noted that while I welcomed and engaged positively with this move, I did so with a series of reservations and concerns about the Youth Employment Initiative Scheme. As while in principle the Youth Employment Initiative Scheme is a very positive thing for young people, unless it is funded adequately it is another sad case of style over substance. Notably, The International Labour Organisation (ILO) estimated the cost of setting up this scheme in the eurozone alone would cost €21 billion per year. And in a derisory token, the Commission has only committed to €6 billion for the Youth Employment Initiative in total. This falls pitifully short of what the International Labour Organisation (ILO) recommended and the allocation of perfunctory funding such as this is insulting towards our Youth. An economic recovery cannot happen in Ireland or indeed the EU without a focused and authentic emphasis on young people. This requires both the political will and ambition to properly implement it."@en1
