"Mr President, I welcome what the Commissioner has said, as well as the statement by the High Representative. We need to see an end to the violence now because police violence, mass arrests and imprisoning opposition leaders and human rights defenders have no place in any election process, and we need the government to take action to stop it now. We as the EU should be ready to support Burundi in a peaceful dialogue, to get a peaceful dialogue established there, to talk about the elections and to prepare for a peaceful electoral process in the run-up to those elections, because these elections are vital, as you have said, not just for Burundi, but for the whole of the Great Lakes Region, where we expect elections in the next 18 months. Commissioner, you have also highlighted that the EU has increased its aid to Burundi. As Chair of the Committee on Development I want to see us support Burundi. I want this country, one of the poorest on the planet, to continue to receive our assistance and to be able to develop the economy and services for local people, but we cannot do that without peace, we cannot do that without stability, and that is why we need the government to heed our calls today. We have already seen thousands of people crossing the borders into the DRC and into Rwanda. Those people need our help as well, and I hope you will talk to Commissioner Stylianides about this and say that we should help the United Nations there. Finally, we ask the Government of Burundi not to put at risk the peace dividend built up over the last 15 to 20 years; it really must heed our calls, move to a peaceful election process and help the country recover and get back on its feet."@en1
