"Mr President, Mr Farage and Marine Le Pen like to have a poster boy of Australia. Let us be very clear: last year – and every year – Australia admits 200 000 legal migrants, 13 750 settled refugees. This illustrates a very clear and simple fact: that this is a complex issue and there are no simple, populist solutions. The Commission came here today with a plan, and I hear from my colleagues that they understand that Triton and what we have heard from the Council do not represent adequate solutions. We got inadequacy from the Council last week but we had a plan today from many of my colleagues. We understand the humanitarian imperatives and we understand that we have to save lives. But we also understand that we have complex solutions concerning resettlement, we have responsibility-sharing and we are not all in this together. If we ask, a month from now, whether Malta or Italy has a real plan that has worked, will the answer be yes? It will not be ʽyesʼ, because the Council was dragged kicking and screaming to this meeting. It did not give us the action we needed. We are hearing it now today from most Members, who believe in the values of the European Union. Let us ensure that the majority who spoke here today have their way and that with the Commission we get the plan that we need."@en1
