"Mr President, we have just commemorated one very unhappy anniversary two years after the Rana Plaza disaster. Poignantly, Rana Plaza occurred two days before another sobering commemoration, that for the International Workers’ Memorial Day, which has been held on 28 April for many years.
Today some people seem to think that European workplaces are perfectly safe. For example, the Commission rightly has a focus on ‘better’ regulation but many, including the British Government, have wrongly interpreted this as meaning ‘laxer’ regulation. That is inexcusable, given the appalling toll of work-related mortality and morbidity.
In my region, the South-East of England, ten people were killed at work last year, over 9 000 suffered an injury and an estimated 184 000 were made ill by the work they did. That is enough to fill two Wembley Stadiums.
We could have no better demonstration of the need for health and safety legislation than these sobering statistics. National and European legislators should heed them more."@en1
