"Today, some small but highly symbolic steps have been taken towards achieving recognition of the plight of ethnic minorities in the European Union, starting from the recognition of the Roma genocide in World War II. It is estimated that 500 000 Roma were murdered and in some countries more than 80% of the Roma population was exterminated.
Today, we officially acknowledge the Roma genocide which took place during the Second World War. Anti-Gypsyism is very much alive today, and the discrimination it entails must not be ignored."@en1
